Golden Outback WA
The Golden Outback is a large region sprawling from Meekatharra (760 km north of Perth) to Esperance (on WA’s south coast 740 s-e of Perth) and across the state’s lower central half to Eucla (on the SA border (1 4 24 km east of Perth). The area encompasses many sub regions of great interest namely the historic Goldfields district (Kalgoorlie-Boulder) where gold is still mined side-by-side numerous very large sheep stations. The coastal region between Esperance and Eucla offers some magnificent beaches, rugged cliffs and underwater caves within close proximity of the vast and remote Nullarbor Plain stretching east to the SA border. To the north are the mining areas of Meekatharra and Mount Magnet while south towards the area known as the Heartlands, sheep and cattle farms dominate. Near the small town of Hyden is the amazing Wave Rock, a 2.7 billion year old 15 m granite rock in the shape of a giant wave. Other towns of interest here include Leonora, Norseman, Merredin and Narrogin. Two national parks not to be missed are the 50 000 ha Goongarrie near Kalgoorlie and Eucla NP comprising 3 340 ha of sandhills, limestone cliffs and mallee scrub.
